I am currently self-employed. I operate Internet Technology Services, an IT consultancy, with a clientele drawn mainly from the education sector. I offer website design and maintenance services, professional development, and CD-ROM creation and publishing services. As part of my work with teaching associations I regularly conduct professional development sessions and present at association conferences.
Recent CD-ROMs include discs for the last two Web Accessibility Summit, organised by RMIT University's Interactive Information Institute (2000) and University of Melbourne and Vision Australa (2001), a revised version of the Arts Computing and Multimedia disc, and a disc for Drama Victoria on Theatre Studies monologues and Drama solo performances.
My last position was at Melbourne IT, beginning in June 1999 initially as a Senior Web Developer, and later as a Technical Specialist.
Projects I worked on include:
The Education Channel:
I worked as a member of a KPMG team, developing the Education Channel, for the Victorian Department of Education. I was the Initiative Leader for the User Audit, compiled the User and Content Audit Reports and, with other members of the team worked on the development of Metadata standards suitable for education world-wide, and assisted in developing the User Accessibility requirements for the Channel.
Multilingual domain names:
I wrote the initial Requirements Specification for MelbourneIT's implementation of multilingual domain names, and acted as liaison with technical experts world-wide.
I developed practical technical expertise in the technologies useful for creating a multilingual and communicated this information to the rest of the MelbourneIT team. I assisted in writing the FAQ for the registration site, and wrote the press releases announcing the completion of the first phase of the project. I attended several international Internet Engineering Task Force and Multilingual Internet Names Consortium (MINC) meetings, and was recently voted onto the inaugural MINC Board.
Development of a reporting structure:
I created a reporting structure to assist in making decisions about viability of products or services being considered by Melbourne IT. Using this structure I made a number of technical reports on business opportunities being considered my Melbourne IT, dealing with infrastructure, digital certificates, security, and virtual private networks.
Needs of mobile users:
I developed a standard operating environment for Melbourne IT remote users. This included access for staff whilst overseas, virtual private network alternatives and equipment, and investigating home Internet access for Melbourne IT staff. I tested a number of Voice over Internet Protocol, desktop faxing and videoconferencing solutions and initiated a VoIP pilot. I also researched, developed, and implemented a security solution for laptop users, to ensure that sensitive data was stored securely. This work included extensive research on available personal digital signatures and certificates and led me to becoming a Notary for Thawte personal digital certificates.
Telecentra:
With colleagues from Melbourne IT and RMIT I worked on the Telecentra teleworking project, advising on security, software, and technologies, and assisting in implementation.
External Consulting:
Throughout my time at Melbourne IT I also worked as a consultant for the Joint Council of Subject Associations and the Victorian Department of Education, Employment and Training, offering advice and assisting in the development of online professional development courses for teachers. I presented a paper on the innovative use of CD-ROMs within websites at the ACEC2000 conference. This work is still continuing, with several new courses being planned and in the process of being developed with various Victorian teaching associations.
At the end of June 1998 I took a one-year leave of absence from RMIT to work with the Joint Council of Subject Associations of Victoria on an EdNA project. I worked with Subject Association staff to develop their Internet skills and to make use of these skills in their day to day work and professional development activities. I supervised the installation of a network for the Richmond Statewide Resource Centre (where JCSAV is based) and the connection of the network to the State Government Wide Area Network.
I developed and presented professional development material for the Department of Education's LoteLinx Project. Designed to assist associations in the development of interactive websites for students and staff, I assisted teachers and associations to develop their skills in the creation of material for their websites. I was a member of the organising committee for the LoteLinx conference, held in Bendigo in March. Through JCSAV I acted as a consultant to academics at Deakin University on developing multimedia for online and on-disc environments. I was a member of the JCSAV VicOne Technology Executive, and a member of the Learning Technology grants committee.
I initially RMIT staff, and teachers from various Victorian subject associations how to use the Internet and write web pages. I also managed and took a key role in the development of a series of web-based CD-ROMS for Sunrise and other areas of the university. During 1997 I was the RMIT webmaster while the site was restructured to reflect the increasing corporate importance of the web for RMIT. From September 1997 until June 1998 I worked with other academics at RMIT to develop an online degree course for the Engineering Faculty. I was a member of the organising committee and a session chair for the RMIT Online Teaching and Learning Developments conference held in December 1997. During the second half of 1997 and on into 1998 I devoted most of my time to producing and co-ordinating web-based CD-ROM projects for Sunrise and Sunrise clients. I was also heavily involved in Sunrise initiatives concerned with web accessibility, standards for metadata, and the development of online learning environments. Also in 1998, I developed and ran a series of Information Technology Professional Development seminars for the Faculty of Art, Design and Communication.
From the beginning of 1989 until mid 1995 I ran a business designing, manufacturing and selling kites. During this time I also completed my Masters degree and during 1992 and 1993 I taught kite design, as a sessional teacher, at Melbourne University.
From 1985, until the end of 1988 I taught at Sale Catholic College, teaching Computer Studies, European History, and Mathematics. I was campus co-ordinator of Computer Studies at St. Pat's, developed a new computer curriculum for the middle school, and created a staff development programme on the use of computers in school.
Naturally, much of my professional activity focuses on using computers, but it is also one of my hobbies, especially for the development of websites and video creation and for research into accessibility, multilingual Internet and voice and video over Internet protocols. I am the webmaster for The Joint Council of Subject Associations of Victoria, the Australian Kite Association, the Mathematical Association of Victoria, Drama Victoria, Art Education Victoria, the Victorian Association for Teaching English as a Second Language and Multicultural Education, the Association of Korean Teachers of Victoria, and advise on the development of several others.
Kite making and flying is still a large part of my life. I have been a sponsored guest at a number of kite festivals, including festivals in Malaysia and New Zealand, and have held several exhibitions of my kites, including one in Queen Victoria Hall, in Victoria's Parliament House. I am currently Chairman of the Australian Kite Association.
Astronomy is a hobby that I have been involved with ever since secondary school, when I got a chance to look through a telescope at the moon and the Orion nebula while I was on a school camp. I have recently built a 10 inch Dobsonian telescope.
I also hold an unrestricted private pilot's licence. For the past six years I have been a member of the Victorian and Tasmanian Regional Airspace Users Advisory Committee, which sits four times each year to advise the Civil Aviation Authority on matters relating to airspace policy in the southern region of Australia.
