A search engine is simply a site that indexes different
information by identifying and collecting information on your site, and
then they index the information into a searchable database.
All search engines have different rules and methods on how they process both the information you send to them in your submission i.e. keywords, as well as the meta tags in your html. Once your site is submitted, the search engines process all this information themselves, it is out of our hands.
Search engines use key words and meta tags to index your information and they use automated programs known as 'spiders' or web crawlers to gather information from your site for their database.
Keywords are terms that the search engines use to match against users queries. The keywords should be used preferably near the top of your page and relevant to your site.
Many search engines will rank your site higher if it contains multiple instances of the keyword. Many engines do not accept the same keyword many times, and your may not be listed, generally, search engines will accept 2-3 repetitions of each keyword. Search engines use a spiders to verify the information.
Search engines use your keywords, Meta Tags, the page title, the content of the site, and any links, so it is extremely important that your site is regularly maintained and that all links are operational otherwise the search engines may reject your site.
Regular submissions give you maximum opportunity to be registered and remain registered with the search engines.
Rarely is a site registered with all the major search engines on the first submission, it may take several submissions before your site is registered. Some submissions will be immediate. Regular submissions are the most beneficial, but if you 'over submit' your site, the search engines will tag you as a Spammer and reject your site.
The search engines get the email address you entered on our form. We cannot control how the e-mail address is used once you site has been submitted. It is likely your e-mail address will be placed on some of the link sites where Spam Spiders can get it and then you will receive Spam.
We strongly recommend you set up a separate email address (such as nospam@yourdomain.com) specifically for your search engine submission reports and that will at least confine the spam to that specific email address.
Submitting your site to search engines is extremely important in the marketing of your website. If you wish, you can take the time to submit your site to search engines yourself. See our "Getting Noticed on the Net" web page in our Technotes section. If you prefer to leave it to us, we offer a service where your site is submitted to over 500,000 sites (search engines and links pages).
Our database of search engines is constantly maintained. In a typical 6 month period, over 90% of the database is completely recycled! Our software can correctly submit to many complex search engines, including Yahoo, Snap/NBCi, HotBot, AOLSearch, DMOZ (Open Directory Project), and many others.
While it is true that over 90% of the traffic comes from a few major search engines, the other 10% comes from thousands less significant sites. We submit to the major search engines and the small ones, too!
We submit your site monthly for an entire year. Reports are emailed to you. This service is only US$50 per year. Contact Peter Batchelor for more details.
