FTP

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a method or transferring files from computer to computer using the Internet. This will allow you to move files from your computer to our server.

On a PC, common FTP programs are WS-FTP, Cute FTP and Coffee Cup Direct FTP.

For Macintosh users we recommend Fetch

A good source of FTP software for PCs and Macintosh computers is http://www.tucows.com/. Look in their Internet section of the files available for your operating system.

Many Web development applications now include an FTP capability. If you use Macromedia's Dreamweaver you will prabably prefer to use the file transfer options within this program.

Be aware that files to be placed in the cgi-bin should generally be uploaded in ASCII rather than binary format. Most FTP programs give you this option, and also give you the ability to CHMOD (change or modify) a file's permissions, which is also necessary when working with files in the cgi-bin.

Dreamweaver 4 and below does not allow you to select the file format you upload or download in, nor does it allow you to CHMOD files.

Dreamweaver MX can be modified to specify the files that are uploaded in ASCII format, and an extension is available (called Set Permissions) that can CHMOD files on the server.

To connect to the webserver using an FTP client, use the details included in the email notifying you of the setup of your account on the webserver.
